Against the other metals

Platinum next to the other metals.

Platinum traded above gold for most of the last forty years and has sat well below it since 2015. One key returns all four precious metals, so comparisons like this take a few calls with the same key.

What's included

Everything you need to build with platinum.

  1. 01

    Second-by-second spot

XPT is polled every second. Every current plan reads the newest tick; only the legacy Lite plan reads a snapshot up to 10 minutes old.

  2. 02

Bid and ask on every call

Every response carries the latest rate plus bid and ask — what dealers and jewellers need to price both buying and selling.

  3. 03

    Troy ounce, gram or tola

Add include=gram or include=tola to get the per-unit price next to the troy-ounce rate, calculated for you.

  4. 04

    150+ currencies

Add quote=ZAR, quote=AED or any supported currency and platinum comes back already converted.

  5. 05

    History back to 1990

Daily platinum history through the historical, time-series and fluctuation endpoints, with the same symbol and key.

  6. 06

    Gold, silver and palladium too

The same endpoint serves XAU, XAG and XPD, so one integration covers every precious metal you price.

XPT

What XPT means

XPT is the ISO 4217 code for one troy ounce of platinum — the same family of codes as XAU for gold and XAG for silver. Request /v3/rates/latest/XPT and you get the spot price of one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) in US dollars, with bid and ask.

If your code still sends the old symbol PL to /rates/latest, it keeps working and is answered with the XPT rate. New integrations should use XPT.

Units

Platinum price per gram and per tola

The base rate, bid and ask are always per troy ounce. Add a unit and the API adds one field beside them:

  • include=gram — price per gram (troy ounce ÷ 31.1035).
  • include=tola — price per tola, the unit used across South Asia and the Gulf (troy ounce ÷ 2.66667).

Combine it with quote to get, say, platinum per gram in rupees in one call. For quick manual checks there is also a platinum price calculator for 150+ currencies.

Spot vs benchmarks

Spot platinum, NYMEX futures and the LBMA price

XPT is a spot price that updates continuously through the trading day. It is a derived market price, not an official benchmark.

NYMEX platinum futures trade in 50-troy-ounce contracts of at least 99.95% purity, for delivery in a future month.

The LBMA Platinum Price is set by auction twice a day, at 9:45 and 14:00 London time, and is run by ICE Benchmark Administration since 1 July 2026. Contracts that reference the fix should use it; apps that need a live, continuous price use spot.

Market

What moves the platinum price

Supply is unusually concentrated. South Africa mined about 71% of the world's platinum in 2025, with Russia and Zimbabwe far behind (USGS), so power cuts, strikes or mine problems there move the price quickly.

On the demand side, catalytic converters are the largest use, followed by chemical and refining catalysts, jewellery and investment. Because platinum and palladium can partly replace each other in converters, many apps track them together — see the platinum to palladium ratio.

Use cases

What developers build with platinum prices

  1. 01

    Jewellery and bullion pricing

Price platinum rings, coins and bars from live spot per gram, in the customer's currency, with bid and ask for buy-back quotes.

  2. 02

    Catalytic converter valuation

Scrap and recycling platforms value converters from their platinum, palladium and rhodium content — and need all three prices.

  3. 03

    Portfolio and precious-metal trackers

Show platinum next to gold, silver and palladium, with history back to 1990 for performance charts.

  4. 04

    Alerts and automation

Notify users when platinum crosses a level or moves against gold, using the per-second feed on paid plans.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Contact support
  • 01

    What does XPT mean?

XPT is the ISO 4217 code for one troy ounce of platinum. The API's XPT rate is the spot price of one troy ounce (31.1035 grams), in US dollars unless you request another currency.

  • 02

How often is the platinum price updated?

XPT is polled every second. On every current plan, from Basic to Enterprise, each request returns the newest price; only on the legacy Lite plan can it be up to 10 minutes old.

  • 03

Can I get the platinum price per gram?

Yes. Add include=gram and the response adds a gram field (troy ounce ÷ 31.1035) next to the troy-ounce rate. include=tola works the same way.

  • 04

Does the API return bid and ask for platinum?

Yes. Every XPT response includes the latest rate plus bid and ask.

  • 05

Is this the LBMA platinum price?

No. XPT is a continuous spot price. The LBMA Platinum Price is an auction benchmark set twice a day at 9:45 and 14:00 London time and administered by ICE Benchmark Administration.

  • 06

Can I get platinum prices in other currencies?

Yes. On the Standard plan or above, add the quote parameter — for example quote=INR or quote=ZAR — and the price is converted for you. More than 150 currencies are supported.

  • 07

How far back does platinum price history go?

Daily platinum history goes back to 1990 through the historical, time-series and fluctuation endpoints.

  • 08

Is there a free platinum price API?

You can start with an unlimited free trial for integrations on the Basic plan — no credit card required. Basic returns USD prices; conversion to other currencies starts on the Standard plan.
